10 Interesting But Underused Creatures In Dungeons And Dragons

6. Nothic

D&D Creature
Wizards of the Coast

Let’s step back from these giant creatures for a minute, to focus on something that you could use in the beginning sections of a campaign. Where ever an adventuring party goes, there are sure to be bodies. Whether these are their enemies or some poor trader who wouldn’t give the party a discount, is up to them. This is why Nothics are interesting and easy creatures to introduce.

Nothics are wizards who have come upon an ancient curse, after delving too deeply into arcane knowledge. Proceeding this event, they have no idea of their former life but are driven by a notion that they may be able to reverse the process. They now seek refuge where there are rotting bodies and death.

These creatures are incredibly insightful and are capable of using magic to look into a person's mind, often revealing their secrets or desires. The Nothic isn’t as powerful of a creature as others on this list, but they do make for an interesting enemy. Their ability to learn about the players desires can lead them to help or hinder a party of adventurers. Be careful though, because a Nothic, when forced to fight, can be vicious and have access to some horrible abilities. It may be wise to keep them on your side.
