10 Jaw-Dropping Video Game Fan Theories That Make Everything Better
5. Limbo: You're The Villain
Okay okay, we said "make games better" but in this case 'better' might have to be 'slightly less depressing', as Playdead's incredibly beautiful (in a twisted, macabre sort of way) indie revolution-starting Limbo is one completely devoid of narrative exposition.
Instead it's an experience that's packed full of symbolism and interpretive imagery, leaving the story up to you. The main idea behind the whole thing is that you're a small boy who wakes up in a very dark, dank nightmarish world. You then set about moving forward, killing certain creatures along the way only to discover your sister at the end, before the screen goes blank.
The most obvious theory is that the entire game itself is this boy's version of purgatory, an idea supported by the fact that the game's final area mimics that of the opening, and as both the ending and intro contain fades out and in from darkness respectively, it's fairly easy to connect them together.
A more enticing theory though, is that throughout this nightmare the boy is actually the villain. Many of us were pretty disturbed by the way we had to dispatch the spider boss, ripping its legs off before then rolling the body through the woods to progress. In addition the theory suggests that the spider only wanted to restrain our character, as it acts as some sort of 'guardian' throughout this plane of existence - attempting to do so by encasing him in webbing at the start.
What if the boy actually caused his sisters death, and his journey through the world is one of anger and lashing out? The other children you come across in the world flee from you at every turn, and going off the fact the main menu shows two fly-covered graves, whatever happened to the boy and girl before they ended up in Limbo was definitely not pleasant.
