10 Jaw-Dropping Video Game Success Stories You Need To Hear

9. Fez

Divisive indie game figurehead Phil Fish is one that thanks to his outspoken nature has created quite the rift between himself and his fanbase. Even after initially conceptualising a Fez II, it was cancelled after GameTrailers personality Marcus Beer called him "A f**king a**hole", sparking an intense Twitter debate to which Fish eventually decided he "Hated this f**king industry" and subsequently pulled everything relating to the game.

All that out the way though, the did still make Fez; an incredibly detailed 2D platformer with a killer hook; you can swing the camera at 90 degree angles at any time, making for four different playing fields to any given level. That may sound confusing, but once you get the hang of how objects can be both 2D and 3D at the same time, it's genius.

Because of this, and partly also due to Indie Game: The Movie shining a light on his project and the struggle to get there, website Quora reported that with the incredible sales of the first game on Xbox Live - even after Microsoft took their cuts for distribution - Fish took home a cool $1,000,000.
