10 Jaw-Dropping Video Game Success Stories You Need To Hear

8. Super Meat Boy

Speaking of Indie Game: The Movie, another title many gamers didn't realise was actually only put together by two people working their butt-cheeks off, was Super Meat Boy.

Since release it's gone on to be known as one of the hardest games of all time, easily causing far more frustration and broken controllers in the long run that it did blood, sweat and tears to get it made. Still, with to this day the total sales of the game exceeding one million units, the two creators Edward McMillen and Tommy Refenes have easily become millionaires themselves - something that after an 18 month development time comprised of living out of apartment buildings and tiny spaces, is surely a justified reward.

McMillen (who also made The Binding of Isaac, another runaway success) was included in The New Yorker's 'Guilt of the Video Game Millionaires' article, where he said he doesn't want to "perpetuate the myth that people can get rich making games" as he himself likes to remain out of the public eye. Still, when your creation takes off with an instantly positive reception that taps into something anyone can enjoy, making your name synonymous with one of the greatest platformers of all time, it's definitely worth celebrating.
