1. Call of Duty
Still, it takes a good 'ol FPS to fill out the #1 spot, in the fastest-selling video game franchise of all time, Call of Duty. Even as a reluctant fan of the series - in that I continue to buy every entry despite knowing full well that they're the same game with a new lick of paint - it is the community that really doesn't do this game any favours, encompassing the majority of this list's complaints into one infuriating whole. Firstly, there's the mics; it's always unruly children on there, never an adult who actually wants to use the microphones tactically, and true to form, its competitive nature just further turns people into mere husks of humanity. While I myself have been annoyed by plenty of cheap kills - where the kill-cam shows things completely differently to how my screen envisioned it - I don't choose to voice it over comms; I'll quietly swear to myself and move on. And that's part of the problem; it isn't merely the being killed, but the community itself, which will turn the most well-adjusted and composed players into rage-infested monsters, ecstatic when they rack up an 8-man kill streak, and furious when a 9-year-old kills them with a pea-shooter pistol. And yet, these games are disgusting addictive; we can't pull ourselves away despite how peeved we get. Are there any other seedy online communities we missed? Let us know in the comments below.
