10 Legendary Video Game Myths That Fooled Us All

8. Slavery: The Game

One of the more recent video game hoaxes revolved around a purported Creative Assembly (Total War series) game that put players in charge of a slave trader looking to 'make it big' in the 17th century by selling slaves. A trailer for Slavery: The Game emerged in 2011, cleverly edited to show as little gameplay as possible, but giving us a sneak peak of a world map view with ships sailing between the continents, and even of the weapons you can use to "Discipline" and "Exploit" your acquisitions. One YouTube video prefaced the trailer with the Creative Assembly logo, leading many to believe that the grand strategy masters were behind the distasteful game. However, it soon emerged that the trailer was actually made by a Dutch filmmaker making a viral campaign to raise awareness about slavery the world over. A bit heavy-handed, but the country in which it's still a national annual tradition to dress up in blackface (Zwarte Piet) has slightly more - shall we say - 'relaxed' attitude towards race relations than many other western nations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCgsXRyYXW0
