6. Miquella's Haligtree - Elden Ring

the callisto protocol
FromSoftware

Elden Ring fans certainly have their passionate opinions about which areas in the game are the worst, but at least the most infuriating part of the game happens to be purely optional.

We're talking of course about Miquella's Haligtree - two words sure to strike fear and anxiety into all but the hardiest of players.

For starters, Miquella's Haligtree is a pain in the ass to traverse - it's hilariously easy to fall off the branches to your doom, and the dungeon is packed with aggravating ranged enemies, enough that even for the standards of FromSoftware it feels like an unreasonable ask.

It's basically a parody of a typical FromSoft post-game dungeon: a weapons-grade pain in the ass that exists only to torture those who dare venture into it.

Sure, some still appreciate the challenge and defend it as a test of everything the player's learned up to this point, but the oppressive design nevertheless represents Hidetaka Miyazaki at his most sadistically punishing.
