10 Loveable Video Games That HATE You
8. Spelunky
Look at his big nose and explorer hat! He's so cute! Until, of course, he gets eaten by a spider, crushed by a boulder, shot with an arrow...you get the idea.
Spelunky, from the outside looking in, looks like a game that's nowhere near as ridiculously difficult as it is. You only have to glance at the artwork to think that it's a 2D platformer which may test you a bit, but ultimately, it'll be fine in the end. Well, you're wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong! Spelunky is mega-difficult and as much as you want to love our protagonist, it's hard to when he just Won't. Stop. Dying.
That said, there's a reason why Spelunky has gained such popularity since its initial release in 2008. This is, in fact, one of the forebears of the roguelike genre, where every run you do is different, with procedurally-generated levels and enemy placement to keep things fresh.
That's why after the twentieth time of being fed to a man-eating plant, you'll boot the thing up again and again and again, as one more run is just never enough. If by some miracle you do manage to get to the end of this one, congrats! Now, go play Spelunky 2 which hates you even more than this one does.
