10 Major Problems With 2018's Biggest Video Games
3. Anthem Is Already "Generic Space Shooter: The Game"
The Bioware of today are nowhere near the Bioware that many of us grew up genuinely adoring. Going from releasing some of the finest RPGs in gaming history like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect 1-3 and Neverwinter Nights, this decade they've been more closely associated with train wrecks like Mass Effect Andromeda, or the thoroughly badly paced Dragon Age Inquisition.
Looking at Anthem it's very clear that their latest new IP isn't going to come with the same sense of purpose we first had in the likes of Mass Effect, as though it was just a quick demo, Anthem is yet another loot-shooter. That means multiple currencies, a 'shared online world', the apparent need to grind out loot with your raid team and everything else.
Where we once associated Bioware with being on the cutting edge of sci-fi game design - whether it be their own creation or someone else's - there's a marked feeling of "Erm... sure?" to Anthem that will remain a problem until we see something more original.
