9. Announcing DLC Before The Game Is Out

DLC in concept is great. If you finish a game and you've really enjoyed it, it's nice when you see that extra content is going to be coming in a few months time. When DLC was first introduced it was mostly used to add whole new areas, characters, weapons and mechanics. DLCs were often more like expansions, furthering the characters and world. Take a look at Undead Nightmare, which completely reinvented Red Dead Redemption into a whole new genre.

But not all DLC is great. Soon enough developers realised that they could hold off on releasing content just to package it further down the line. A bit of a scummy practice, but not unforgivable. After all, video games are made for profit. However it gets taken a step too far when DLC a game is announced before a game has even released! Normally this DLC will be packaged with the game, but only if you pre-order it or get a special edition.

Players can then purchase the DLC later down the line of they bought the standard edition. It's just such an annoying tactic to see deployed by so many developers.

No one should buy a game at full price to only have further content locked away behind a further paywall as early as day one. Mass Effect 3 has to be one of the worst contenders, releasing a key companion as a DLC character on the launch day of the game.
