4. A 2D Metroid Is Coming To Switch

The Metroid franchise has seen its fair share of ups and downs. Super Metroid perfected the 2D action game on the Super Nintendo, but then mysteriously sat on the sidelines for the Nintendo 64. Metroid Prime was an instant cult-classic on the GameCube, but the Wii and Wii U iterations left the fanbase feelling rather numb.

So with Metroid Prime 4 still being cursed with delays and development trouble, it appears that Nintendo is trying to soften the blow. Rumours have indicated that a new 2D entry is in development for the Nintendo Switch, somehow related to 2002's Metroid Fusion. Whether this is a sequel or a remake is unclear, but the connection to the fan-favorite Gameboy Advance game seems to have stuck.

It's probably a smart move for Nintendo, especially considering that outside of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, this early part of 2020 seems rather barren for the Switch.

A new 2D Metroid game could be just what the doctor ordered, adding a heavy-hitter from Nintendo's library to help keep the hype train going until the inevitable rush of the fall season.
