The major spoiler: John Marston dies and son, Jack, takes revenge

Another one that gamers seem to think has passed its invisible 'spoiler embargo' - Red Dead Redemption was one of the last-gen's strongest story-driven games. What it lacked in side-quests it more than made up for in setting, gameplay, and story, but with a strong narrative comes an equally strong desire for spoilers, and that's meant you'll be more than hard-pressed to find a gamer who doesn't know about this particular twist.

The game's ending finds the title's main protagonist, John Marston, brutally murdered by some corrupt federal agents who had enlisted his help in tracking some gang members under duress. After this the game immediately picks up with Marston's son, himself a bounty hunter on the quest for revenge. You track down the villainous Edgar Ross and begin to dish out some very rudimentary frontier justice, and thus the story concludes.

Going into Red Dead is as much about the journey as it is the conclusion, but going through all the title's events with the knowledge that John is just going to die anyway isn't really fantastic by any stretch of the imagination, and inhibits the enjoyment to be had in seeing the plot through to its end. Not that Red Dead isn't worth your time if you already know this knowledge going in - it is - but the sense of danger is limited slightly by the impending tragedy of the game's climax.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
