10 Mind-Blowing Video Game Plot Twists Nobody Saw Coming

9. Samus Is A Woman In Metroid

This one shows us that an effective plot twist can be pulled off even without the benefit of gorgeous visuals, drawn-out cutscenes and a ton of exposition. In fact, this was done in the very first Metroid game that came out in 1986 on the NES. All it took was one screen at the end of the game to quickly blow the minds of gamers everywhere. So here you are playing as Samus Aran, badass bounty hunter extraordinaire who goes around hunting space pirates and alien parasites. It was a character who immediately ranked up high with the great protagonists in the NES library such as Mario, Link and the Belmonts. However, Samus was definitely more macho. He was covered from head to toe in sleek sci-fi armor and had a giant energy cannon for a hand. Definitely better than a plumber in blue pants. So, naturally, gamers are lured in. When they play, they get to enjoy a good game. When the final boss is defeated and the ending starts to unfold, Samus takes off the armor and gamers everywhere get to see their protagonist in the flesh and they make one startling discovery €“ Samus is a woman. That€™s right. The adrenaline-pumping, testosterone-fuelled protagonist of the game was actually a badass babe who knew how to take care of business. Samus was here to show us that gender matters little when you€™re wearing an extra thick armor and can shoot missiles.
