10 Moments That Literally Stopped Video Games
4. John Marston's Last Stand - Red Dead Redemption
Red Dead Redemption touts arguably the strongest ending to any Rockstar game, when protagonist John Marston holds his desperate last stand against the Bureau of Investigation's Edgar Ross and his army of goons.
John sends his family away to escape and then opens his barn doors to face Ross and his many men once and for all.
At this moment, the player enters Dead Eye mode - the ultra-slow-motion aiming mechanic that grinds time to a halt - allowing them to paint a number of Ross' men with targets.
But of course, the numbers game is simply too overwhelming, and though you might manage to gun down several of John's assailants, there are just too many guns pointed at our gunslinger protagonist for him to make it out alive.
John is riddled with bullets and quickly dies from his injuries, in what would be an almost unbearably tragic end were it not for an epilogue where John's grown son Jack is able to mete out sweet revenge by killing a retired Ross.
