Whimsicott was a grass type dominating the fifth generation with the Prankster ability, which makes all non-attacking moves have increased priority. It allowed this Pokémon to set up its traps early and deal with significant threats with ease.

This ability was teamed up with the brutal combination of Substitute, Leech Seed, Protect, and Encore. Opponents are stuck using useless moves while Whimsicott whittles them down. Alternatively, you could have swapped Protect with either Toxic to drain an opponent's health faster, or switch out by using U-Turn.

It may now also have the fairy type in addition to being a grass type, but its use in competitive battles has dropped significantly since Prankster no longer works against dark types. Strategies for Whimsicott have seen minor changes, with Toxic being replaced with Moonblast to help with type coverage against dragon, dark, and fighting Pokémon.

Alternatively, there is a move set that focuses on EV training it into Special Attack and speed. This helps Whimsicott bring down heavier targets with Grass Knot, and cover other popular types by using Moonblast, U-Turn, and either Hurricane or Psychic.

Choice Specs are a great item to give Whimsicott for this build, but be prepared to switch it out constantly.
