10 More GENIUS Ways Video Games Fought Cheaters

1. Using The Doom Cheat Codes Gives The Opposite Effect - Heretic

Now in fairness to id Software, it's clear from their cheat-happy publishing history that they're not really against cheaters - they just like poking a little fun at them.

Case in point, we have Heretic - an authorised Doom clone with a fantasy sheen that was released just a year after Doom, and one which had a surprise in store for anyone who attempted to re-use the legendary FPS' cheat codes here.

In Doom, entering "iddqd" would grant the player God Mode, but doing it in Heretic hilariously had the exact opposite effect - you'd instantly drop dead on the spot in a pile of gore.

And to add insult to injury, a message would be displayed at the top of the screen saying, "Trying to cheat, eh? Now you die!"

That's not the only one, though. Type in Doom's code to unlock all weapons, ammo, and keys - "idkfa" - and you'll lose all weapons and ammo except for your staff, with another taunting message telling you, "Cheater - you don't deserve weapons!"

To actually activate God Mode and unlock all weapons and ammo, you had to seek out different cheat codes specific to Heretic, rather than just expecting to recycle Doom's.

If nothing else, this felt like Raven Software clapping back against the notion that Heretic was just a cynical Doom clone, right down to the cheat codes.
