10 More Great Video Games That Never Got Sequels
4. Driver: San Fransisco
Another series that started to suffer sequel fatigue, it looked the end was nigh for the once illustrious series (if you don't count the third one, obviously). But then, like the proverbial phoenix, Driver: San Francisco came along in 2011 and blew the bloody doors off of everyone's expectations.
Revitalising the series by putting main protagonist Tanner in a coma for most of the game may not make sense initially, but it did open up some new gameplay possibilities. Yoinking elements from TV shows like Quantum Leap and Life on Mars, the unique gimmick in D:SF was being able to "bodyswap" into any car on the road. Sure, it had some limitations, but it was new life into the series that hadn't been done before.
It all ended as well as can be, leaving the series open for a possible sequel. Probably not with the same mechanic, for story reasons, but the critical reception would suggest Tanner's place behind the wheel was cemented. But alas, besides a naff mobile speedboat game in 2014, we've had nothing from Ubisoft since.
