Few games released over the last year have generated quite as violent a backlash as Annapurna's top-down dramatic thriller puzzle game Twelve Minutes.

The game is centered around a man attempting to escape a 12-minute time loop inside his apartment, and though various twists and turns are unfurled over the course of the story, the big reveal is that the man and his wife are actually biologically related.

The rug-pull at the end of the game reveals that the husband is in a relationship with his half-sister, who to make matters worse is pregnant with their child.

The time loop has effectively been a mental construct created by the husband to try and figure out a way for them to be together.

Players remain sharply split on the twist, many dismissing it as tasteless and clumsily executed, while others praised its bold attempt to push storytelling boundaries in video games.

Either way, just about nobody could've seen this coming when Twelve Minutes was first revealed, that's for sure.
