10 MORE Scariest Levels In Non-Horror Video Games

2. Queen Vanessa’s Manor - A Hat In Time

In one way or another, all the titles on this list are surprise horror. Nobody picked up these games expecting to have the cookies scared out of them. There’s a special place in the Horror Hall of Fame And/Or Shame, however, for the many magnificent b*stards who have slipped horror levels into kids’ games.

In fairness, A Hat in Time is a blast for adults too. The core 3D platforming is pure nostalgia fuel for grownups raised on Banjo-Kazooie, Spyro or Psychonauts, and Hat’s rewarding gameplay and cherubic protagonist are absolutely intended to draw in young players and reward their efforts. Consider it recommended for the young gamer in your life.

That said, anticipate the occasional damp sheet or 3am visit after Queen Vanessa’s Manor, as the worthy Phát Tấn reminded us. Gorgeously creepy artwork combines with masterful jumpscares, an intense soundtrack, visual quotes from horror classics and an intense, macabre vibe to deliver some of the creepiest content ever aimed at under-12s.

Frankly, some of us grownups play this one with a protective plushie at hand. At least we can drink.
