6. Making Maps Is Hard - Doom 64

This one is an example of the times where dev inside jokes that are chill pre-launch accidentally stay in the game post launch.

In the level MAP03: Main Engineering upon entering the second room a pedestal is generated where the blue key is triggered. If you just happen to jump inside the area where the pedestal is set to generate after the key appears you get trapped in the machine, unable to get out of the geometry. You’ll also spot a curious texture on all four sides of the pedestal base. It’s a solid green block with the words “I suck at making maps” on it.

Now this isn’t the only place you can find this texture and it appears to be a signal back to the devs themselves that they messed up the texture implementation in a certain room.

The intention being that these would be easily spotted in playtesting and fixed up before the game made it out in the wild. Of course, unlike Pokemon, you can’t always catch ‘em all, so the funny self-dig can still be spotted in certain areas by lucky players, whether the devs wanted you to see it or not.
