10 More Video Game Sequels That Completely Missed The Point
4. Silent Hill: Homecoming
You can say what you want about Silent Hill 3 and Silent Hill 4: The Room, but at least they got what Silent Hill was supposed to be. Sure, they were rough around the edges, but the spirit of this twisted horror franchise was at the heart of them both. Then there's Homecoming, which is about as faithful to the Silent Hill spirit as EA is to their fans.
Homecoming was the first mainline SH instalment produced without Team Silent, and it shows. While not an abysmal game in its own right, it completely missed what made the series so profound.
For example, the gameplay is far more concerned with action than atmosphere and dread. Plus, it plays out linearly, taking away that sense of exploration that was palpable in the other games.
Additionally, the return of iconic monsters like Pyramid Head completely rules out the town's reflection of the protagonist's inner turmoil. Why is Alex Shepherd seeing the same creatures as James Sunderland? Oh, because of brand recognition, how charming.
Make no mistake; this is nothing more than a game masquerading as Silent Hill.
