10 Most Beloved Video Game NPCs Of The Decade

7. Shane (Stardew Valley)

Witcher 3 bloody baron
Eric Barone

The beloved farming simulator meets adventure game is full to the brim of quirky villagers to make friends and fall in love with. Somehow, in a game full of such mystery, the maudlin plea of Shane stands out.

When we meet Shane for the first time, he is an angry, drunk, down and out. He is very unpleasant towards you and seems not worth the time getting to know, especially in a village full of kind and quirky people.

Spending the time getting Shane to open up to you, however, reveals a story of heartache, addiction and redemption. Shane's story feels the most real, and you soon start caring and worrying about Shane even outside of interacting with him.

By the end of Shane's story arc, we can't help but be invested in Shane's success. If you do spend the time to help him out, the pay-off is beautifully heartwarming and life-affirming.
