10 Most Controversial Video Game Achievements Ever
3. Remember September '44 - Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway
The Achievement
While connected to Xbox LIVE, play the game on September 17th.
Why It's Controversial
This one is both hilarious and infuriating. Basically, first-person shooter Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway was originally set for an August 2008 release, but delays resulted in it finally hitting stores on September 23 of that year.
No big deal, right? Except, developers Gearbox Software had already programmed an achievement into the game which could only be unlocked on September 17th of any given year, and due to the game's unexpected delay, players had to wait almost an entire year to be able to unlock it.
There was no way to cheat the 'cheev by changing the Xbox's internal clock, either: players had to just wait it out, and in the event you forgot about next year's chance, you had to go another year before trying again. Naturally, this angered a lot of fans.
In a way it's a pretty ingenious means to ensure achievement hunters didn't sell their copy of the game for at least a year, but also a monumental screw-up considering it wasn't actually part of the plan.
