10 Most Controversial Video Games Rated 'Adults Only' In America

1. Grand Theft Auto San Andreas

The most famous Adults Only game of all, and the only one that ever came out on consoles, was actually at first not rated as such (hence it sneaking onto consoles before all the hubbub). Released to plenty of controversy for its violence, "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," was in fact simply a Mature title. Then these strange videos of a, "Hot Coffee," mini-game where the main character, CJ, has player-controlled sex began popping-up online. Developer and publisher Rockstar at first tried claiming this was all the work of, "Hackers," who dramatically altered the games code, but that didn't work long. It came out that the mini-game had in fact been in the original, "San Andreas," with the content cut from the main game, but still buried in the files. By simply having a modded PlayStation 2, or tweaking some PC code, the mini-game could be found and played. The outrage was immense. National news outlets in the US reported about, "Hot Coffee," politicians used it as an excuse to introduce legislation that would regulate games (something which the Supreme Court later ruled unconstitutional due to the 1st amendment's protection of free speech), people sued Rockstar, and the ESRB re-rated the game as being an Adults Only title. Rockstar recalled the game, and released a new version that truly cut the content for consoles and issued a patch for the PC, a patch which made any mods to the previous version unplayable (even innocent ones that simply did fun things like add multiplayer). It was a huge fiasco, a major controversy, and something that to this day makes innocently asking someone to come in for some, "Hot coffee," arguably scandalous. Were any missed that you think deserve inclusion? Have you ever played an Adults Only game and found it to not be awful? Share your comments and let us know!
