10 Most Disturbing Sci-Fi Video Games You'll Ever Play

9. BioShock

Dead Space
2K

The spiritual successor to the aforementioned System Shock series, BioShock is a true giant of modern gaming IPs.

The player takes on the role of Jack, the lone survivor of a plane crash who, upon coming across a lighthouse, finds himself transported to the underwater world of Rapture.

Armed with anything from a wrench to whatever firearms he can scavenge, Jack must survive against hordes of Plasmid-enhanced enemies, Rapture's security tech and, of course, the famous Big Daddies and Little Sisters.

Jack, too, has Plasmid enhancements he can employ in his desperate struggle for survival, but such considerations are secondary to the atmosphere in BioShock.

The story itself is nuanced and well paced, with characters and motivations well written for the genre, but it is in the presentation that BioShock disturbs.

Dark and claustrophobic by its very nature, this underwater biome is a character in and of itself.

The haunting and subtly unnerving music adds a further layer of dread to the already oppressive proceedings, making for a true 'hold your breath for minutes on end' title.

The further the player proceeds into this dark, damp, and intimidating complex, the higher their feelings of tension and anxiety will undoubtedly become.

A classic and a nightmare in equal measure.
