8. Finding The Warp Zones - Super Mario Bros
The feeling of first discovering that there's a way of sliding through blocks or running over the top of an entire level is still one of the best sensations any Mario game has ever produced, with these hidden locations offering players the chance to skip through entire worlds and enjoy the smug feeling of knowing they've unlocked something most other gamers never would have.
The very first warp zone in Super Mario history was found in the very first underground level, World 1-2, where players are able to break through some of the bricks lining up the top of the level and run carelessly over the obstacles below.
Warp pipes became one of the most influential features of the Mario franchise going forward, helping to lay the groundwork for plenty of other games in the future. Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan featured warp pipes that went back levels, Super Mario Bros. 3 featured new warp whistles that allowed players to be whisked off around the world map, and the expansive world maps from Super Mario World onwards have all made use of warping and bypassing levels.
