7. The Hunter - Dead Space (2008)

A claustrophobic and visceral sci-fi survival-horror, part of what made Dead Space such a nerve-shredding experience was the ingenious method for defeating the nightmarish necromorphs. Unlike most games where a few bullets to the head would do the job, Dead Space required players to dismember their creatures' limbs instead. And with their erratic movements and scarce resources, this wasn't an easy task.

However, Dead Space broke its own rules when, in the fifth chapter, it introduced a new enemy in the form of The Hunter.

Upon instinctively shooting off its razor-sharp limbs in sheer panic, though, players will watch in horror as it regenerates its lost limbs and continues its pursuit.

With no way to eliminate this enemy permanently, fighting The Hunter becomes a white-knuckled test of endurance in which player's nerves are pushed to breaking point. The only way to succeed is to slow the brute down just long enough to make it to the next area.

Swarms of ordinary necromorphs and moveable obstacles amplified the anxiety to an almost unbearable level. The difficulty and tension were so intense here that it’s understandable if you put down the controller for good.
