The remake of Resident Evil 2 was more than a fresh coat of paint. It was a complete overhaul of the survival-horror classic that was faithful to the original while introducing new ideas and reworking some old ones for series veterans.

The gory, zombie-infested hallways of the RPD were an atmospheric and claustrophobic setting. Aiming which encouraged a methodical approach to combat elevated the tension of every encounter. And the return of the relentless Mr X created some of the most nerve-wracking moments in the game, his echoing footsteps signalling his unstoppable approach.

Boss encounters were also part of the package. However, the slow-paced combat that was great for sustaining tension against hordes of shambling zombies didn’t translate as well when it came to these larger threats, with none being as frustrating than the climactic encounter with Mr X.

During this point, Leon or Clare must face the Tyrant one final time as they make their escape before the laboratories self-destruct. The stage is a small elevator platform scattered with fallen debris. With the purposely slow controls making it difficult to avoid his punishing attacks, retrying this battle is guaranteed.

At least a rocket launcher makes for a cathartic final blow.
