1. The Catalyst
Revealed at the end of Mass Effect 3, the Catalyst is the true mastermind behind the Reaper invasion and their harvesting of all advanced organic life in the galaxy. After reaching the top of the Citadel, Commander Shepard briefly converses with the mysterious A.I., after which he is forced to decide which course the galaxy will take heading towards the future.
Has there ever been a character in a video game more hated than The Catalyst? His sudden appearance in the last 5 minutes of Mass Effect 3 and the resulting conclusion created a nerd outrage of epic proportions. Many consider his reveal as the moment the Mass Effect series collapsed within itself, causing many fans to cry out in despair. There are many reasons people hate the Catalyst: his presence creates plot holes and contradicts so much of the intricate lore that was established beforehand, while his philosophical musings and circular arguments make little sense.
It also doesn't help that he insists on presenting himself as that stupid kid no one felt sorry for at the beginning of the game. It's almost as if he was hastily conceptualized and written with little thought towards everything that preceded his appearance. Hmmm. Ultimately, the Catalyst isnt hated by millions because he is evil or annoying or an unfairly difficult enemy. No, the Catalyst is hated simply because his appearance drastically tarnished one of the most beloved sci-fi franchises of all time.
