When Dragons Lair hit the arcades back in 1983, gamers flocked to cabinets to pay witness to the beautiful animation. They then probably flocked off once they realised they would have to take out a second mortgage to fund a playthrough of what was effectively a series of quick-time events.

Still, the groundbreaking graphics hold a special place in some people's hearts. Dirk The Daring was the hero of the adventure, clad in armour and his famous helmet, he fought seemingly countless amounts of baddies and death traps, each on with their own death animation.

Someone has compiled them together in a hysterical video on youtube that is well worth checking out if watching a Disney-esque hero plunged screaming to his death is your bag.

In most of the pitfalls and explosions, Dirk’s helmet stays planted on his head, with only a few glimpses of his black locks here and there. Even on the game over screen where he crumbles as a skeleton, his metal hat sticks in place.

It’s only in the final seconds when Dirk is granted a kiss from his beloved Princess Daphne do we finally get a clear view of him without his helmet, bringing a symbolic end to the adventure.
