PaRappa The Rapper is an icon of the PS1 era and is credited with bringing the rhythm game to the mainstream. Yes, before we started a revolution with our dance dancing, or played legendary gigs with The Beatles, we were learning karate with an onion via the power of rap music.

Most of PaRappa’s characters were created back in 1994 when Sony Music Japan hired artist Rodney Alan Greenblat to design some cute characters for merchandise such as clothes and toys.

Meanwhile, popstar Matsaya Matsuura was working on a musical Simon says game for Sony’s brand new game console, the PlayStation. They used some of Greenblat's characters but still needed a hero.

Matsuura wanted an upbeat, lovable, slightly naïve dog. So after coming up with a few concepts, Sony chose Greenblat’s design that featured the famous pointy beanie with the cute frog logo on the front.

The game was a massive success, spawning sequels and spin-offs, and part of that can be owed to PaRappa’s design. He's cool, he's funny, he's more 90s than yellow triangles and circles on a pink background, and he has excellent taste in hats.
