10 Most Iconic Moments From Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

6. Experiencing Death By Nuke In Aftermath

'Aftermath' is a mission that can be completed in less than five minutes, but one that remains in the player's mind for some time afterwards.

You're cast as Paul Jackson - part of the whooping, confident American squad that attempted to capture Al-Asad just a few missions prior. Only this time, the "success" comes from demonstrating to the player what it might be like to be trapped inside the blast radius of a nuclear weapon.

Trapped inside a downed chopper, Jackson crawls slowly and painfully towards a blistered highway only to give up and die after staring in horror at the mushroom cloud. Everything is incinerated and buildings crumble. The screen burns and blurs in orange and brown.

You fade to white, the screen changes to reflect an overhead computer readout. "K.I.A" replaces Jackson's blip.

Punchy and powerful, this mission showed just one part of the many horrors of modern warfare. This moment also set an important precedent for the Modern Warfare series as MW 2 and 3 would bring their own versions of a shocking single player story moment with massacres and terror attacks. That said, neither had that same horrific impact as did Modern Warfare's nuclear blast.
