Who would have thought that mixing violence, blood and a heavy metal soundtrack would make for gaming heaven? While Doom didn't invent the first-person shooter genre, it brought it to the masses and had a big hand in making it the gaming force it is today. Every single FPS game on the market today (really, anything with a gun in it too) owes a huge debt to Doom; that's just how important the game is. Similarly to Halo, this list could have been filled with weapons from Doom; after all, it introduced many which have become mainstays in FPS. The powerful Shotgun is immensely satisfying to fire; the Rocket Launcher quickly decorates rooms in gore; and the Chainsaw... Well, it's a Chainsaw, of course it's going to be brutal. None quite top the iconic BFG 9000 though. As the most powerful weapon in the game, it's a real joy to use. Giant green plasma balls shoot out and decimate enemies; even better, there's no splash damage, so you can use it up close and personal too. Sure, it lacks the finesse of most of the weapons on this list but who cares when you're destroying demons left right and center? The genius of the BFG 9000 is how unsubtle it is; it's loud, it's violent and it suits Doom down to the ground. Still unsure of it's legacy? A massive variety of games feature references to the BFG (notably, the Halo series features several, further highlighting Doom's influence on the games) and it was even featured in the horrific movie spin-off, although it was rebranded as the Bio Force Gun. Hidden Blades and Gravity Guns are great fun but sometimes, you just need to blow up rooms full of Demons. No gun comes close to the BFG 9000 in that regard. Agree? Disagree? Is there a weapon that we've missed that definitely needs representing? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
