Giant, unrealistic swords are commonplace in Japanese RPGs but easily the most iconic of them all is the Buster Sword, wielded by Cloud in Final Fantasy VII. Despite a reasonably simplistic design, it's become amazingly recognisable. If you head to any sort of gaming convention, you can almost guarantee you'll spot someone dressed as Cloud wielding the weapon; you simply can't have a Cloud cosplay without one. Essentially, the Buster Sword is a giant broadsword with two holes near the hilt (used to hold materia; most weapons in the game can carry materia but the Buster Sword is the only one with visible holes). It's a little worn but aside from that, it's main defining characteristic is its size. Hilariously, the Buster Sword is "approximately five to six feet long" while Cloud is 5'7", meaning the sword is almost as big as Cloud himself, if not bigger. Sadly, in-game, the Buster Sword becomes irrelevant fast, although Cloud continues to use it as his weapon in scenes outside of battle. However, it's legacy can be seen throughout later games in the Final Fantasy series too; Final Fantasy IX features a reference to it and Cloud's outfit with Buster Sword appear as downloadable content in Lightning Returns. There are a lot of giant swords in video games but the Buster Sword is easily the most memorable.
I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
