10 Most Important Video Games In History

5. Mortal Kombat

GTA 3
Midway

Other than inspiring one of the most catchy songs known to man, Mortal Kombat also inspired something that changed how games were classified.

When Mortal Kombat first hit the scene, it was immediately popularity as audiences saw it as something completely cool. Now the fighting game by itself was nothing too impressive, with the gameplay being fairly simple. The characters just being sprites of real people was neat, but not what got people's attention.

No, there's only one reason why the game got so much attention, for good and for bad: Blood.

Not just blood, but blood and gore. Every hit had the red stuff coming out, and those gruesome (for the time at least) fatalities got everyone's attention. Including the government.

Before hand, there was no rating system for games like there was for movies. If a parent knew nothing about video games, it would be hard for them to tell the difference between Sonic the Hedgehog and a game where you can rip a man's spine off his back. This sparked a lot of outrage, and the ESRB was born in order to properly rate video games.

Mortal Kombat literally made an entire classification system, and its seen on every game to this day.
