When the first Xbox was originally announced by Bill Gates and future Fortnite star Dwanye "The Rock" Johnson, it wasn't guaranteed that anyone would really be interested in it.

After all, Nintendo had been a staple in the industry for decades at that point, and Sony not only entered the scene with PlayStation, but had released the widely beloved PS2. Microsoft being able to just enter the gaming industry against these competitors and find success was incredibly unlikely. In order for it to work, they needed games that would get them noticed.

Enter, Halo.

A launch title, Halo: Combat Evolved is the template of modern shooters as we know it. With it's stellar single player campaign and multiplayer, everyone praised the game, and many Xbox consoles were sold just so people could play it.

Halo is the reason Xbox turned into a mainstay. Microsoft probably would have failed in the gaming world without it, and as such, things such as the 360 and Xbox Live, both huge influences on the industry by themselves, wouldn't be around.
