10 Most Influential Video Game Sequels Of All Time
8. Metal Gear Solid
Serving as a long-awaited sequel to 1990’s Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid was released in 1998 and was many people’s introduction to the bizarre but brilliant mind of its auteur Hideo Kojima.
The storyline follows Solid Snake, a solider infiltrating a nuclear arms facility in order to prevent a nuclear strike, with the narrative having as much depth as anything ever seen in a videogame, with twists and turns aplenty as the story unfolded.
The game was also a pioneer of the stealth genre, paving the way for hugely successful series’ such as Deux Ex and Splinter Cell to follow. Metal Gear Solid also introduced concepts never seen before in a game, such as the frequent breaking of the fourth wall and an incredible boss fight against a psychic foe who was beaten by swapping your controller into the second port, meaning he could no longer read your mind.
It was like nothing else we had ever seen, and really showed the rest of the world what videogames were capable of.
