10 Most Influential Video Game Sequels Of All Time
6. Street Fighter II
The original Street Fighter debuted in arcades in 1987, and put players in control of martial arts expert Ryu, pitting them against ten opponents in a worldwide tournament.
The original game was popular, but sequel Street Fighter II offered players the choice of multiple characters, each of which had their own fighting style and moveset. Moving beyond simple punch and kick attacks that arcade goers had become familiar with, all-new grapple and throw moves were introduced as well as unique special moves.
At the time this was an absolute revelation, bringing more depth and replayabilty to the genre than ever before, and sparking the rise of competitive multiplayer gaming.
Following the game's incredible success, the 90s saw a host of fighting games released that utilised many of the features made popular by Capcom’s flagship title.
Even when the genre moved into 3D with the likes of Tekken, the influence on the genre remained evident.
