Back in the days of Sony’s original PlayStation console, Grand Theft Auto and it’s sequel had both been successful titles for what was then known as DMA Design, but it was the move into 3D with the release of Grand Theft Auto III that created a phenomenon.

Taking the basic template laid down by its predecessors, GTA III offered a huge open world environment for gamers to enjoy, with a seemingly never-ending volume of things to do in this world. The missions themselves could also be completed in a a non-linear structure that allowed players to choose from a selection of missions all with multiple ways to tackle them.

To compliment this, the brilliantly written and fully voice acted cutscenes introducing new characters and setting up missions were an absolute revelation at the time, bringing the world to life in a way no other game could match.

From True Crime to Saints Row we’ve seen an endless list of titles inspired by GTA III's design over the past twenty years, and to this day any game set in an open city is still labelled a ‘GTA clone.'
