10 Most Influential Video Game Sequels Of All Time

4. Dune II

GTA 3
Virgin Interactive

Released in 1992 with a very loose connection to the original game, Dune II is a real-time strategy (RTS) game which sees players take command of one of three different houses and build military units and infrastructure, with the eventual goal being the destruction of the enemy.

Although it was not the first RTS game to be made, some of the key principles of Dune II, such as needing to forage for resources, using the ‘fog of war’ as a key gameplay feature, differing factions to choose from and the ability to create and upgrade a base, were ground-breaking at the time.

This would pave the way for its studio Westwood to create Command & Conquer, which was incredibly successful for years to come. Its influence can also be felt on the Warcraft series, which is of course a behemoth in the world of online role-playing games now, but started its life as an RTS, with the original released back in 1994 after Dune II.
