10 Most MIND-BLOWING Things We Learned From The Nintendo Gigaleak
9. The First 3D Link
Before development began on Super Mario 64, Shigeru Miyamoto and his team considered the possibility of crafting a three-dimensional plumbing platformer using Argonaut's cutting edge Super FX chip, used in games such as Star Fox and Stunt Race FX.
The idea - one which involved toy trains, oddly - never got off the ground, as Nintendo EAD refocused it for their upcoming 'Ultra 64' hardware. Though we never saw Mario in the FX's ultra-low poly, someone apparently had a stab at Link, the sword and shield wielding hero of The Legend of Zelda. Can you imagine if Ocarina of Time had looked like this?
This wouldn't have been Link's first 3D appearance though, fact fans: that came as a pre-rendered, sleepy cameo in Super Mario RPG.
