7. A Towel Could Save Your Xbox 360's Red Ring Of Death
A more recent one this, and a homemade solution for the abomination that was the Xbox 360's state at launch - which is to say, around 54% of all consoles sold at the time self-destructed with the now-infamous 'Red Ring of Death' light configuration. Naturally people rushed to the internet to find a cure or complain in unison, and it was here that the 'miracle fix' of wrapping your 360 in a towel and leaving it on for a considerable amount of time was born. The theory behind it was the same as the PS3's 'yellow light of death' i.e. the console had already heated up and fried a piece of internal solder, so by doing the same again it would reheat and reverse the process to hopefully let the wires re-form. In the end even for the very small percentage of people that reported it working again, their consoles reverted back to the unplayable 'RROD' state only moments later, leaving Microsoft to quickly sweep the whole thing under the rug by offering everyone full replacements as quickly as possible.
