6. Saddam Hussein Bought 4000 PS2s To Take Over The World

Remember when the PS3 came out and Sony touted the mysterious 'Cell' processor? They claimed you could simply hook up as many as you like, exponentially increasing the system's hardware in the process. Cue lots of "It's over 9000!" memes, but the idea of an interconnected supercomputer of PlayStation consoles first appeared back in 2000 when World Net Daily published a 'report' detailing how Hussein was planning on combining 4000 separate PS2's into one gigantic supercomputer. They claimed he'd be able to create "thousands of polygons a second" which would help Hussein render everything from unmanned drone flight paths to various flight simulations - basically the whole "end of the world" spiel, except without a modicum of evidence or plausibility to back it up. Naturally the story took off, and although there remains a shred of truth as to the stockpiling of the chips within the system as some means to an eventual end, to this day there's never been a concrete line drawn under the whole thing.
