3. Square's Tom Sawyer

One of the single most racist games ever released, whether to the amateur or professional markets, Square No Tom Sawyer was based on the Mark Twain novel and released in 1989 for the NES by Square Enix and it featured what can only be described as a disgustingly racist characterisation of Slave Jim. Like the dangerously reductive racist imagery, Jim has stereotypical large lips - something taken straight out of the bad old days of racial discrimination when stereotypes were used to demonise the physicality of African Americans to create a destructive otherness. It wasn't released in the West, but the fact that it was made at all clearly reflects that something was rotten at the core of its development team - especially considering the game was supposed to be fun. http://youtu.be/8WAmZD-LvB0
