9. The Stanley Parable's Unnecessarily Racist Joke
Davey Wreden's The Stanley Parable is a brilliant exploration of narrative exposition in games, the role of a voiced narrator and that of the player's relationship with them. What it isn't, is racist - not anymore anyway - as before a patch, you could find a particular image during gameplay that appeared to show a young black child being immolated by a whiter-than-white businessman.
The image comes as part of a slideshow of sorts, highlighting the nature of choice in the most extreme way possible. Over the top of the image, naming the man Steven, it reads:
"He could spend years helping improve the quality of life for citizens of impoverished third-world nations, or he could systematically set fire to every orphan living in a 30-kilometer radius of his house."
A little extreme there, Mr. Wreden, but I suppose I get your point. Why the racial connotation though? Polygon reported than a number of people got in touch with developers Galactic Cafe to note that it was in very bad taste and made them uncomfortable, resulting in the image being immediately patched out and forgotten about moving forward.
