10 Most Overlooked Video Games Of 2023
1. The Invincible
One of the most visionary games of the entire year, The Invincible can't be easily dismissed as just yet another "walking simulator," given its jaw-droppingly rich atmosphere and prestigious source material - Stanisław Lem's 1964 hard sci-fi novel of the same name.
Yes, you'll spend most of the game's five-hour play-time walking around the hostile planet Regis III as astrobiologist protagonist Yasna searches for her missing crew mates, but developer Starward Industries invests so deeply in their characters and immersive world that it's tough not to become intoxicated.
If you could reductively call it "Firewatch in Space" given the sparseness of its setting and the player's minimal direct interactions with other characters, The Invincible is still very much a haunting gem all on its own merits.
Sadly despite rock solid critical reviews and a "Very Positive" Steam user rating from those who actually bought it, the game's launch window sales have been incredibly soft to date, suggesting that a walking sim not on Xbox Game Pass releasing in such a crowded year didn't have much of a chance to break out.
One can only hope that the game might find its audience in the coming months with a slightly less-packed gaming slate on the horizon.
