In history, the Spear of Destiny was allegedly the same spear that pierced Jesus’s side as he hung on the cross. It was imbued with destructive powers as a result of absorbing his blood.

In recent history, there were rumours that the Nazis had discovered the Spear and tried to use its powers to win World War Two, but the spear turned on them, their ship sank and was lost at the bottom of the ocean. That’s how the legend goes, anyway and it ties in perfectly to the Tomb Raider mythology.

In Tomb Raider Chronicles, Lara manages to stowaway on a Russian submarine which is heading down to the shipwreck and she manages to find the spear first. Upon returning to the submarine she is caught and the spear is taken from her by force by the villains who want to use it for evil, despite Lara warning them of its danger. The spear turns on the villain, kills him and sinks the submarine.

Lara narrowly makes her escape just before the submarine blows up. Lara would be the only survivor of this horrific incident and upon realising the terrible power of the spear, she vowed to never return for it, deciding that some things are best left forgotten.

Simon is a writer, cat dad and presenter of a geeky radio show with his husband. He loves Doctor Who (except 10 who can get in the bin…only joking.) He idolises Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lara Croft and would 100% be a Sith Lord in a galaxy far, far away. He wishes life was like a musical so he’d actually be a good singer.
