10 Most Predatory Loot Box & Microtransaction Systems In Video Games

5. Plants Vs. Zombies 2

EA strikes again, doing what they do best as once-beloved developer Popcap and the PvZ franchise was quickly monetised by drilling some large microtransaction holes into its core, attempting to mine the love millions had to get the cash out.

The worst was actually "updating" the existing app so the once-replenishing lives system now came with a price tag. If you wanted to re-run older levels, well... unless you could do the whole thing without any zombies making it across the screen, that'd be 99 cents please, otherwise level failed.

Holding peoples' enjoyment of a game to ransom is the throughline you'll see in all of EA's blind box systems, and even Plants Vs. Zombies creator George Fan wasn't a fan of his game being bastardised in such a way, leaving EA earlier in 2017 to pursue greener, less money-grubbing pastures.

Once again, a lucrative franchise blossoming in its own way, coming complete with scores of fans - only to be acquired by EA and driven straight into the ground.

Pray for Titanfall...
