10 Most Promising New Video Game IPs Coming In 2016
3. Overwatch (PC, PS4, XBO)
There are quite a few multiplayer squad-based shooters coming up in 2016, and honourable mentions here also go to Epic Games' Paragon and Gearbox's Battleborn. But of all the games looking to take a bite out of Team Fortress' pie, Blizzard's colourful and wacky Overwatch looks the most promising. The game pits two teams of six players against each other across a variety of vibrant maps set on a near-futuristic Earth. The maps are inspired by current and historical locations, such as ancient Egypt and Japan, suggesting that Blizzard aren't holding back on the eccentricity - which may resonate with people like myself who've long been waiting for a game with the silly charm of the fantastic TimeSplitters series. There are several classes to choose from, each of which has unique strategic abilities and attributes. These range from powerful, highly defensive 'tanks', to healers, by way of lethal lightweight ninjas. Overwatch is a spectacle to behold and the beta version is a blast to play, offering a deceptive level of strategy beneath its friendly facade. This could be the big multiplayer shooter of 2016, especially when you consider that it's in the capable hands of a developer renowned for delivering compelling multiplayer experiences such as Diablo III, Starcraft and World of Warcraft.
