10 Most Replayable Opening Sequences In Video Game History

6. Final Fantasy VII

Much like an unexpected bout of diarrhoea, Final Fantasy VII wastes no time in getting started. Nobuo Uematsu's incredible music score almost dominates the game's opening cinematic, which gives players a glimpse of a mysterious flower girl before panning out to reveal the huge, vibrant city known as Midgar that players will get to know better than their own mothers. And then of course there's the stupidly spiky-haired dude with a huge sword (that totally isn't over-compensating for something) jumping off a train roof to meet a dude with a gun for a hand and a temper as short as a particularly vertically-challenged hobbit. It's intriguing from the very start thanks to its strong writing that does a great job of introducing this cast of misfits and explaining why they're on their way to blow up a reactor that will kill hundreds of innocent people. The majority of the first disc of this three disc-epic is spent exploring the smoggy slums of Midgar. It was amazing to realise that once Cloud and the gang left the city there was actually an entire world outside its walls that was just waiting to be explored.

When I'm not playing games, I'm probably either writing about them somewhere or singing stupid songs inspired by them. Or eating pizza.
